At Valor & Virtue Martial Arts Academy LLC, we believe that true strength is demonstrated through service to others. The knowledge, skills, physical capabilities, confidence, and character our students develop are not intended solely for their own benefit. As their abilities grow, so does their responsibility to use those abilities in service to something beyond themselves.
Community involvement is therefore an important part of our educational philosophy. Through charitable events, service projects, physical challenges, and partnerships with community organizations, students and families are given opportunities to put our core values—Honor, Integrity, Discipline, Duty, Commitment, Sacrifice, and Justice—into action.
These experiences teach lessons that cannot be learned through words alone. Students practice Honor and Integrity by honoring commitments and acting in service to others. They experience Discipline and Duty by accepting responsibility and contributing to a shared purpose. They learn Commitment and Sacrifice by giving their time, effort, and physical energy for causes greater than themselves. And they practice Justice by recognizing the needs of others, standing for what is right, and contributing to the greater good.
Many of our community events intentionally combine physical challenge with service. Students learn that strength, endurance, and resilience are not valuable only because of what those qualities allow us to accomplish for ourselves. Our physical capabilities can also be used to help others, honor sacrifice, raise awareness, support important causes, and strengthen our community.
These experiences also bring students, families, and members of our broader community together around a common purpose. Working side by side builds relationships, creates shared experiences, and reinforces the understanding that meaningful accomplishments often require cooperation, perseverance, and collective effort.
Ultimately, our goal is to cultivate a lifelong commitment to leadership and service. We want students to leave Valor & Virtue understanding that greater ability brings greater responsibility—and that true strength is measured not only by what we can endure or accomplish ourselves, but by how we use our abilities to lead, serve, protect, uplift, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others in Tucson.
Our Community Impact
Community involvement at Valor & Virtue is not a one-time event. Year after year, our students, families, and supporters have come together to turn our values into action through physical challenges, charitable fundraising, and service to others.
To date, our recurring community initiatives include:
- 9 Pledge-A-Thons supporting local hunger relief—our first seven benefiting the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona and our two most recent benefiting the Marana Food Bank & Community Resource Center.
- 9 Memorial Day MURPH events, raising $4,500 in support of the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
- 4 WE DEFY fundraisers, raising $2,000 in support of programs serving combat veterans living with military-connected disabilities.
- 4 Family Fit Fest events, raising a combined $5,436 in support of the fight against childhood cancer.
Across these initiatives alone, our community has completed 26 charitable and service-focused events and raised at least $11,936 for charitable causes—in addition to the food collected through nine years of Pledge-A-Thons.
For us, these numbers represent more than funds raised or events completed. They represent students and families choosing to give their time, effort, physical abilities, and resources in service to others. They are an expression of what we seek to teach: that greater ability brings greater responsibility, and that true strength is demonstrated by what we are willing to do for something greater than ourselves.
Pledge-A-Thon
Every Fall, the Valor & Virtue Martial Arts Academy LLC puts on a food drive in coordination with the Tucson Food Bank and Community Resource Center in an effort to fight hunger in Tucson.
Students, families, and friends donate food items, which become “pledges” that participants then work together to complete through a challenging group workout—similar in concept to a traditional jog-a-thon, but measured through exercises and physical effort.
In fall 2025, our dojo collected more than 1,000 pounds of food, representing approximately 30,000 combined repetitions of exercises including pull-ups, sit-ups, squats, and running. Approximately 40 students and family members worked together for nearly four hours to complete the challenge.
The Pledge-A-Thon connects physical capability with service. Through sustained effort and sacrifice, participants contribute directly to fighting hunger while developing gratitude for resources that can easily be taken for granted. Learn more about our Pledge-A-Thon Here
Memorial Day Murph
Every year, Valor & Virtue participates in the Memorial Day Murph Challenge to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
The Murph Challenge supports the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation while providing our students and families with an opportunity to connect physical hardship with remembrance, gratitude, and sacrifice. By completing a demanding workout in honor of those who gave their lives in service, participants are reminded that the discomfort we voluntarily endure in training is small compared with the sacrifices made by others.
For our younger students especially, this experience provides an opportunity to learn that sacrifice is more than a word or one of our Core Values. It is something demonstrated through the lives and actions of others—and something worthy of remembrance, gratitude, and respect. Learn more about Memorial Day Murph Here
WE DEFY
Valor & Virtue proudly supports the We Defy Foundation and its mission of providing combat veterans living with military-connected disabilities opportunities for healing and connection through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and fitness.
Through our WE DEFY Seminar & Open Mat, veterans, instructors, students, and members of the martial arts community come together for training, learning, and fellowship while supporting opportunities for veterans to experience the benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Our involvement reflects an important part of our philosophy: martial arts can be more than something we practice for ourselves. It can create connection, build community, support others through adversity, and provide opportunities to use our knowledge and abilities in service to those who have served. Family Fit Fest
Family Fit Fest is Valor & Virtue's family-centered workout-for-a-cause, bringing families together through physical challenge while raising funds and awareness in support of the fight against childhood cancer.
Teams work together through fitness challenges that require communication, perseverance, mutual encouragement, and shared effort. The event gives families an opportunity not simply to exercise together, but to use their physical abilities toward a purpose greater than themselves.
Family Fit Fest reflects several principles central to Valor & Virtue: fitness should build capability, families grow stronger through shared challenges, and strength can be used in service to others. Through the event, we seek to create meaningful experiences for participating families while supporting children and families facing challenges far greater than those we voluntarily encounter in a workout.
Our previous Family Fit Fest raised $2,031 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, continuing our commitment to connecting physical fitness, family, and community service.
